Texas Sawmill Festival 2008 In East Montgomery County

I am standing at Hwy 59 and FM 1314-

And I know that back in the day, different things were seen.

There was no Porter Wal-Mart or Kroger store on site-

Or any traffic, in which to fight.

Instead where the Dollar stands, along with the other stores-

A sawmill was buzzing, that opened up so many doors.

Providing for the people, who first came to East Montgomery County-

Life, back in those days, were as simple as they could be.

Simple, but not easy, "as it supposedly", is today-
People back then, just lived life in another way.

Working the land, and trying to provide-
Going to a little school, and partaking in a hay ride.

Appreciating what one had-
And when they got it, they were glad.

Burying their dead, on the land where they lived and sweated-
As a great history lesson, to those who have gone before, we are much indebted.

Those days are gone, and we've now become so sophisticated-
With our worldly things and thoughts, that tend to be continually debated.

But let's step back for a moment, when we looked around-
And miles and miles of forests, is what was found.

When Sunday, was the time, to put everything away-
For it was a day of rest, and we were serious, when we called it God's Day.

When the children could go in the forest to play-
Without the thought of being done wrong, or taken away.

When Mama or Grandma would take the time to bake-
Otherwise, there would have been no pie or cake.

When Daddy handmade the little girls a Little East Montgomery County Doll-
Or the boys, whatever he could, so that they could play ball.

The time seems so far away, but in a flash one can step back, and I can't wait-
To attend the Texas Sawmill Festival for 2008.

The East Montgomery County Historical Society will be there-
With many historical facts, and pictures to share.

Jerry Gay, will be found-
Creating a realistic old fashioned town.

Our East Montgomery Towns Book will be for sale-
Filled with local history, and will satisfy, our local residents without fail.

Kay Lynn Dawes and Gerrie Dickens have indexed the Enloe Cemetery, and are working on other ones too-
Preserving history, is a goal that is being implemented, through and through.

Enloe cemetery has ancestors starting back from the 1860's, a sacred ground-
With many of their offspring in the area, generation after generation, still around.

Back in the days, when at FM 1314 and Highway 59, there was no rush-
Just a buzzing all day at the sawmill, until the night, when there was a breathtaking hush.

Families tucked in bed, preparing for another day-
Living life in East Montgomery County, the old fashioned way.

Splendora Founder's Day 2008

At the junction of U.S. Hwy 59 and Farm Road 2090-
Is a little town, called Splendora, that is not as small as it used to be.

On the Southern Pacific railroad, six miles north of New Caney, and twenty-two miles from Conroe-
It has that little town atmosphere, that we'd all like to get to know.

In the late 1800's Cox's Switch, is the name that it used to go by, as it caused quite a stir-
For Charles Cox, is the one who was responsible for getting the Houston, Eastand West Railway to extend a narrow gauge spur.

In 1896 Charles Cox, asked the first Postmaster,M.S. King, to rename the town-
And because of the thoughts of "splendor of it's floral environment," the name of Splendora happened to come around.

Back to 1895, the Green Leaf Church building was used as a school-
Until 1913, when a two room school, that accomodated 50 students, was built brand new, so that they could properly learn the golden rule.

1936 was the year that it was partially burned-
But the following year the tides appeared to have turned.

For a new brick school building was constructed, and as time went by-
In 1981, it was being used to school the Junior High.

In the 1940's the school system became an independent school district all on its own-
The incorporation of the town in 1966, attested to the fact, that it had grown.

And today still growing as it gets closer and closer to Houston-
With plenty of little town living, that still needs to be done.

One organization, the Splendora Founder's Day Society, was formed in 1981-
To help acknowledge the deep rooted history, and to organize and oversee all the celebration and family fun.

This weekend, the town will be celebrating Founder's Day, with much pride-
With a parade, a Fun Run, a BBQ cook off, and so many other activities, on the side.

A benefit for the community as a whole-
As the annual celebration continues to unfold.

May 9 and 10, the celebration will take place-
As the residents gather, to reflect, have fun, and re-live life, at a slow pace.

The East Montgomery County Historical Society will be there-
With plenty of pictures from the past, to exhibit and share.

A grand celebration of the town of Splendora as it should be-
A precious town, deep in the heart of Eastm Montgomery County.

East Montgomery County Historical Society Hosting Oral History Workshop

The East Montgomery County Historical Society will be hosting an
Oral History Workshop given by Dr. Stephen Sloan of Baylor
University. Please pass this message on to anyone, on your
list that you feel would be interested in the class.

Thanks, Kay Dawes-Vice Pres. EMCHS

One of our resources for learning the history of our family
is diminishing daily -- our older residents and family members.
At our May 13th meeting we have Dr. Stephen Sloan, director
of the Institute for Oral History at Baylor University, coming
to teach us how to properly take oral histories. Beginning with
arranging the interview and decisions on what type of equipment
to use; he'll cover the basics of one-on-one interviewing: asking
questions that get results; asking open ended questions;
listening carefully; following up for details; retelling stories.
He'll finish up with ways to preserve and share the stories
gathered. This is an excellent opportunity for everyone to
learn the right way to gather and preserve these treasured
memories.

Taking Oral Histories is a vital skill for everyone, and will be
invaluable in recording our family members. Just think of what
a thrill it would be to have your grandparents or great
grandparents on CD telling about how life was when they were
growing up.

The workshop will begin at 6:30, since it will be three hours
long, the regular May 13th meeting (and the workshop) will
be held at the Porter Fire Department on Loop 494 by Home
Depot instead of the R.B. Tullis library, where we usually meet.

Please e-mail Barbara Hamilton at retired@icansurf.net to
pre-register ASAP, if you plan to attend. There will be a $5.00
fee for non- members of EMCHS to attend this workshop. It is
open to anyone. Please consider this as a special invitation to
members of other historical and genealogical groups in the area
and their friends.

The Things That We Do For Our Children, And Our Grandchildren

The things that we do for our children, and our grandchildren. It was the grandson’s birthday, so we spent the day at Chuck E. Cheese. Not the whole day of course, but a good portion of it.
It’s fun when you first get there. The blinking lights on all of the games, is not something that you see everyday, so it is pleasant to the eyes. After a while, though, it all begins to blend in.

I love to play the little bowling game that they have. I must say that I am pretty good at it too. The only problem is that a lot of times, I don't get to finish my game, because as close as the lanes are, a child next to me, ends up playing one of my balls, on their lane. There's not much you can do about that, because they are the young ones, and they have quick hands.

I got to re-visit my childhood on the large rocking horse that they have. I fit comfortably in it, and rode it with everyone that I went with. As long as it didn’t rock too much forward, I was okay. Personally, at this stage of life, I like to keep my feet on the ground.

I’m fine while eating some pizza, and seeing Chuck E. Cheese dance, the first time. I had to join in the fun, and ended up waving to him, many times after that. After the third hour things for me begin to wind down, and I had an urge to flee, but the kids and grandkids, have only begun.

Lucky for me I found a table to sit at, that was near a game, that featured Elvis. It was one of those coin games, that drag the coins, almost to the end. I was close enough to hear Jailhouse Rock and All Shook Up, over and over again.
Please note: repetiton is not bad, when it is something that you enjoy. Myprevious seat had involved listening to the ABC’s sang over and over again. That seat had to be replaced, as it was not covered under something that I’d like to hear over and over again.

“One more coin, please,” is also heard over and over again. The kids and grandkids, aren’t going to ask for anymore, after the last one they get. The only problem is that, there is no last one. I have become an endless pit of delivering coins.

Okay, we’re on hour four, and my nerves are almost depleted. I had been here for a long time, and I’ve promised myself that I will never return again. Of course, I know that is not the truth, for somewhere in my future is another 4 or 5 hours scheduled at this same location. I’m just hoping that it is at a date, that gives me time to recuperate. The things that we do for our children and grandchildren. Without them, I wouldn’t get to test my patience. Without them I wouldn’t get to experience hundreds of children, running, playing, and inserting coins. Now who would want to miss that?

Life is filled with adventure, and as I am writing this, I know that I am ready for that next adventure. The new dinosaur park in East Montgomery County is in the planning stages. I can see myself there for 5, 6, or 7 hours. I'm tough. I can do it.

"Adventures in children's land-
And patience, go hand in hand."

Little Miss East Montgomery County Doll

My Grandmother was a little girl, when her family moved to East Montgomery County-
She ran in the forest, and played house amongst all the trees.

She used her imagination, as best as she could-
She made mudpies, and had pretend people, madefrom wood.

She watched her Mama take care of the babies all day long-
She watched her rock them, and sing them a song.

Oh, how she wished she had a baby of her very own-
A play one, of course, for she'd have a real one, when she was grown.

Her Mama always made her one out of corn husks, but they didn't last-
For when she played with them all day, they would fall apart fast.

But one day, her Daddy came home, and out of his pocket was a wonderful surprise-
It was a real doll, that had hands and little bitty eyes.

Made from his hankerchief, he made it for his own little girl-
While working at the sawmill, for she was his favorite little one, in the whole wide world.

I can still see Grandma playing with her Little Miss East Montgomery County doll-
At home, or church, in the winter, spring, summer, and fall.

(Dedicated to the Mayers, the Mathews, the Lees, and the Needhams, of East Montgomery County.)
