East Montgomery County Historical Society Hosting Oral History Workshop

The East Montgomery County Historical Society will be hosting an
Oral History Workshop given by Dr. Stephen Sloan of Baylor
University. Please pass this message on to anyone, on your
list that you feel would be interested in the class.

Thanks, Kay Dawes-Vice Pres. EMCHS

One of our resources for learning the history of our family
is diminishing daily -- our older residents and family members.
At our May 13th meeting we have Dr. Stephen Sloan, director
of the Institute for Oral History at Baylor University, coming
to teach us how to properly take oral histories. Beginning with
arranging the interview and decisions on what type of equipment
to use; he'll cover the basics of one-on-one interviewing: asking
questions that get results; asking open ended questions;
listening carefully; following up for details; retelling stories.
He'll finish up with ways to preserve and share the stories
gathered. This is an excellent opportunity for everyone to
learn the right way to gather and preserve these treasured
memories.

Taking Oral Histories is a vital skill for everyone, and will be
invaluable in recording our family members. Just think of what
a thrill it would be to have your grandparents or great
grandparents on CD telling about how life was when they were
growing up.

The workshop will begin at 6:30, since it will be three hours
long, the regular May 13th meeting (and the workshop) will
be held at the Porter Fire Department on Loop 494 by Home
Depot instead of the R.B. Tullis library, where we usually meet.

Please e-mail Barbara Hamilton at retired@icansurf.net to
pre-register ASAP, if you plan to attend. There will be a $5.00
fee for non- members of EMCHS to attend this workshop. It is
open to anyone. Please consider this as a special invitation to
members of other historical and genealogical groups in the area
and their friends.
